Membrane:
- Double
Structure:
- 4 basic parts:
1. Nuclear Membrane
2. Nucleoli
3. Nucleoplasm
4. Genetic Material
- Surrounded by a nuclear envelope containing chromatin/chromosomes and one or more nucleoli with nucleoplasm.
- Nuclear envelope consists of two membranes; outer membrane is continuous with the endoplasmic reticulum.
- Nuclear envelope is perforated by nuclear pores.
- Chromatin is mainly composed of coils of DNA bound to histones.
Functions:
- Contains genetic (hereditary) information in the form of DNA.
- Ribosomal subunits and rRNA are made in the nucleolus.
- Pores regulate the exit and entry of materials.
- Regulates import/export.
- Regulates metabolism.
- Involved in cell organelles synthesis.
